Why 0.05 TH/s Matters as a Minimum Threshold
Understanding the practical lower bound for ASIC hardware when planning a second mining unit in a home or small commercial space.
When operators ask us about adding a second miner, the conversation often starts with a number: 0.05 TH/s. It sounds modest compared to current-generation ASICs that deliver 100 TH/s or more. But the threshold exists for practical reasons tied to power infrastructure, not hash rate bragging rights.
Legacy Units Below the Threshold
Hardware rated below 0.05 TH/s — old USB miners, early GPU rigs converted to SHA-256, or decommissioned units from 2016–2018 — typically draw power inefficiently. A unit producing 0.03 TH/s might consume 400W, yielding roughly 13,000 joules per terahash. Modern ASICs achieve 20–30 J/TH. Running two inefficient units side by side wastes breaker capacity that could support a single efficient machine at far higher output.
Breaker Math Changes Above 0.05 TH/s
At 0.05 TH/s and above, you enter the territory of dedicated ASIC power supplies, typically 1,200W to 3,500W per unit. This is where Korean residential and light-commercial circuits become the limiting factor. A standard 30A/220V circuit delivers roughly 6,600W continuous. One modern ASIC at 3,200W leaves room for a second — but only if inrush current during startup does not trip the breaker.
We measure this on every site visit. The difference between a 0.04 TH/s USB farm and a 0.05 TH/s ASIC is not just hash rate — it is the shift from hobby-scale power draw to infrastructure-scale decisions.
What This Means for Your Second Unit
If your first miner already operates at 0.05 TH/s or above, you are likely on a dedicated circuit with appropriate wiring. Adding a second unit of similar class requires verifying that circuit headroom, not starting from scratch.
If your first unit is below the threshold, we usually recommend replacing rather than supplementing. The power savings from a single modern ASIC often exceed the combined output of multiple legacy units on the same breaker.
Korean Voltage Considerations
South Korea uses 220V single-phase power in most residential settings. ASIC power supplies rated for 110–240V input handle this without modification, but startup inrush can be 20–40% higher than steady-state draw.
